Astana asks a building to survive minus forty and plus thirty-five in the same year. The envelope is a deep concrete frame with recessed glazing, so that the glass is shaded in summer and protected in winter. The plan puts the cores on the cold north edge and the workspace on the south. At ground level the frame is opened up and glazed back, giving the block a covered arcade that stays usable through the winter months.
